Ascension Health Nearing $3.9 Billion Deal To Acquire AmSurg’s Outpatient Surgery Centers Across U.S.

Ascension Health, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health systems, is in advanced talks to acquire AmSurg, a network of ambulatory surgery centers, in a deal valued at approximately $3.9 billion.

The acquisition would mark a significant expansion of Ascension’s footprint in outpatient care and is part of a broader trend among health systems to shift more procedures from hospitals to lower-cost, more efficient ambulatory settings. Sources close to the negotiations said the deal could be finalized within weeks. However, they cautioned that no final agreement has been reached, and the terms are still subject to change.

AmSurg, once a division of Envision Healthcare, was separated from its parent company as part of Envision’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring in 2023. The separation was part of a broader strategy to stabilize and streamline Envision’s operations, which had been burdened by financial struggles and mounting debt. AmSurg emerged from the process as a standalone entity, retaining ownership and operation of over 250 ambulatory surgery centers across the United States.

For Ascension, the acquisition would represent a strategic move to bolster its outpatient services portfolio at a time when more patients and payers are favoring procedures done in non-hospital settings due to cost and convenience. The health system already operates hospitals, clinics, and urgent care centers across 19 states and Washington, D.C., and the addition of AmSurg’s network could significantly enhance its service reach and efficiency.

The potential deal reflects growing interest in outpatient care assets among both strategic buyers and private equity firms, as health systems increasingly look for ways to adapt to evolving patient preferences, reimbursement models, and cost pressures.

Representatives for Ascension and AmSurg declined to comment on the ongoing negotiations.
