Mayo Clinic And Microsoft Collaborate To Develop A Frontier AI Model For Healthcare

Mayo Clinic and Microsoft have announced a strategic partnership to develop and deploy a next-generation AI model purpose-built for healthcare.

The initiative aims to extend Mayo Clinic’s clinical expertise, integrated care model, and medical knowledge to more patients worldwide.

The collaboration combines Mayo Clinic’s extensive healthcare expertise, de-identified clinical data, and longitudinal patient insights with Microsoft’s advanced AI, cloud infrastructure, engineering capabilities, and superintelligence technologies. Together, the organizations are creating a frontier AI model designed to support a wide range of clinical reasoning tasks and healthcare applications.

The model is intended to analyze and synthesize diverse clinical information, enabling earlier diagnoses, more personalized treatment plans, and improved patient outcomes. By providing actionable insights and assisting healthcare professionals in complex decision-making, the partnership seeks to address some of the most pressing challenges in modern healthcare.

Ownership of the AI model will remain with Mayo Clinic, reflecting its commitment to patient trust, clinical excellence, safety, and responsible AI governance. Microsoft plans to offer access to the model through Azure Foundry APIs, allowing healthcare organizations around the world to leverage advanced AI capabilities in support of patients, clinicians, and consumers.

“Mayo Clinic is committed to putting patients first, and we have long believed AI can help transform healthcare,” said Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, President and CEO of Mayo Clinic. “By combining our clinical expertise and trusted data foundation with Microsoft’s AI and engineering capabilities, we are creating a healthcare innovation unlike anything seen before, bringing the benefits of Mayo Clinic to more patients everywhere.”

Unlike general-purpose AI systems, healthcare AI requires deep clinical understanding, longitudinal context, strong governance, and rigorous real-world validation. The new model is being specifically designed for healthcare and will initially be deployed within Mayo Clinic’s clinical environment, where it can be continuously evaluated, refined, and improved through practical use.

“Frontier medical intelligence is within reach,” said Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI. “Mayo Clinic’s unmatched clinical expertise, de-identified health data, and longitudinal medical insights make this an extraordinary partnership. Together, we are building a state-of-the-art healthcare foundation model that has the potential to transform patient care.”
