Vanderbilt Health Acquires Tennova’s Clarksville Hospital, Related Physician Clinics From Community Health Systems

Vanderbilt Health just announced that it has completed the acquisition of Tennova Healthcare–Clarksville Hospital, Tennova ER–Sango, and related physician clinics and outpatient services from Community Health Systems Inc. (CHS).

Vanderbilt Health has held a 20% minority ownership stake in these operations since 2021.

The 270-bed hospital will be renamed Vanderbilt Clarksville Hospital (VCH), and the freestanding emergency department will operate as Vanderbilt Emergency Sango.

The acquisition also brings multiple physician practice locations into the Vanderbilt Health system, serving communities in Clarksville, Dover, Pleasant View, and Tiny Town. Depending on location, these practices offer services including orthopaedics, primary care, wound care, digestive health, urology, and surgery.

Expanding its regional footprint, Vanderbilt Health aims to improve access to high-quality, cost-effective care delivered close to home.

“We are thrilled to welcome Vanderbilt Clarksville Hospital into our health system,” said Jeff Balser, MD, PhD, President and CEO of Vanderbilt Health and Dean of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. “Providing exceptional care in community settings is essential, and we look forward to expanding programs and services for the people of Clarksville and Montgomery County.”

This acquisition represents Vanderbilt Health’s fourth regional hospital expansion, strengthening its presence across Middle Tennessee beyond its extensive inpatient and ambulatory services in Nashville. VCH joins Vanderbilt Health’s regional medical centers, which include Vanderbilt Wilson County Hospital in Lebanon, Vanderbilt Tullahoma-Harton Hospital in Coffee County, and Vanderbilt Bedford Hospital in Shelbyville.

Vanderbilt Health has a strong track record of investing in its regional hospitals, and residents of Clarksville, Montgomery County, and surrounding communities can expect expanded adult and pediatric services in the coming years.

Initial plans for the next year include enhanced emergency department staffing, the addition of pediatric emergency medicine specialists from Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, and expanded surgical specialty services. Longer-term plans include recruiting additional physicians and staff to broaden specialty care offerings.

“I am delighted to welcome the physicians, nurses, and staff of Vanderbilt Clarksville Hospital into the Vanderbilt Health family,” said Jane Freedman, MD, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Health System Officer. “We look forward to working closely with the local medical community to support caregivers and improve the health and well-being of our patients.”

VCH currently employs approximately 1,100 staff members and more than 30 physicians. Vanderbilt Health has committed to hiring substantially all current employees who are in good standing.

Services already in place include an OB-GYN hospitalist program, comprehensive oncology services provided in collaboration with Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, and Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit services staffed by specialists from Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital.

VCH is designated as an Accredited Chest Pain Center and a Wound Care Center of Distinction and has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval. Click here for more information about the Vanderbilt Clarksville Hospital.
