Former Dallas Macy’s Being Converted Into 42,000-SF Pediatric Center

Construction is underway on Children’s Health Specialty Center RedBird, a 42,000-square-foot facility in the former Macy’s building at The Shops at RedBird in southern Dallas.
Developer Russell Glen Company announced the start of work in June, with an opening planned for December 2027.
The center is expected to provide primary care, urgent care, behavioral health services and sports medicine. It will join Parkland Health and UT Southwestern Medical Center at RedBird, where a former regional mall is being redeveloped to accommodate healthcare providers alongside retail, dining, offices and other uses.
For Children’s Health, the location brings services closer to families in southern Dallas. The developer says approximately 35,000 patients from southern Dallas County receive care each year at Children’s Medical Center Dallas. The RedBird center is intended to give some families another place to seek care within their community.
The project also illustrates a distinct approach to reusing a vacant retail anchor. Rather than replacing the former Macy’s with another store, RedBird is putting a large, familiar space to work as part of a broader healthcare destination. Its opening is still more than a year away, but the conversion shows how established retail properties can play a role in health systems’ outpatient expansion plans.
